"NewsWrap "NewsWrap": An alarming new report in the respected British medical journal "The Lancet" says homophobic prejudice is causing HIV rates among gay men in the region to be 10 times higher than in the general male population; India's Supreme Court refuses to stay the Delhi High Court ruling decriminalizing adult consensual gay sex, and orders the Government to respond to a challenge to the action; Russian LGBT leaders meet with a government official for a first-time-ever discussion about discrimination; Portugal's LGBT people party with Pride, while a march in Valletta caps off a week of Pride events sponsored by the Malta Gay Rights Move ment; the U.S. Navy charges a fellow sailor with the murder of gay Black Seaman August Provost but still refuses to call it a hate crime; the Forth Worth, Texas City Council requests a federal investigation into the violent raid of the Rainbow Lounge gay bar on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion; a second "kiss in" continues protests in Salt Lake City, Utah over the trespassing arrests of a Mormon Church plaza-kissing gay couple, followed by a supportive "kiss in" outside the Mormon Temple in San Diego, California; and best-selling Black gay writer E. Lynn Harris unexpectedly dies at the age of 54 [with a soundbite from a previous "This Way Out" interview with him] (written by GREG GORDON, with thanks to STEVE PRIDE, and REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported this week by MICHELE PLEASANT and LEIGH MOORE) [10:23] + "Rainbow Minute" and "Audiofile" billboard (intro'd by an excerpt from "Fanfare for the Common Man" performed by the BRASS ENSEMBLE)

The JEAN-NICKOLAUS TRETTER COLLECTION IN GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER STUDIES was a point of Pride for America's TWIN CITIES during this year's commemoration of the Stonewall Rebellion. The Collection's "FORTY YEARS AFTER STONEWALL" exhibit featured just a portion of the over 30,000 items housed at the University of Minnesota, but it dramatized the importance of preserving the little things that become the building blocks of a movement's history. ERIC CO LLEARY served as Guest Curator for the exhibit. He spoke with "This Way Out" correspondents DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND ("Fresh Fruit" at KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul) about some of the Tretter gems in the "Stonewall" celebration

"AARON COPELAND, THE UNCOMMON AMERICAN COMPOSER" is honored in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by JOHN DEBOER)

Expect the unexpected from a CANADIAN with attitude (excerpts from "Uncharted Territory" and "The Only Dyke at the Open Mic" from KATE REID's "I'M JUST WARMING UP"), a bunch of BERKELEY lesbians (the title track and "Polka Casserole" from THE POLKANOMICS' "LOLA"), and a party-ready LONDONER ("Set it Up Pull It Off" and "Comin' Out 2 Play" from QBOY's "MOXIE") in this month's "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by the artists, hosted by JD DOYLE & CHRIS WILSON and written & produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM) . This show's been a long time coming, and is overdue, as I've never devoted an entire show to Queercore, Homocore, gay punk, or whatever you choose to call it ... and those are elusive terms at best. Jon Ginoli was the catalyst. I've been a long-time fan of Pansy Division and last January when I heard that there would be a new CD, new film and Jon's book all released together this Spring, I knew this was the time. Fortunately Jon's book tour made a stop in Houston in May, so I was able to cajole him to stop by my house for an extensive interview.

And last January I also sounded out my friend Larry Bob, of HolyTitclamps.com, on the project, and he's been of immense help in recommending artists and songs (and providing songs) and on gee, what is queercore? He knew of my fascination with the JD's Top Ten Homocore Hit Parade Tape, and got me in contact with GB Jones, who graciously agreed to an interview about the tape, and JD's ... the zine she and Bruce LaBruce created that sparked the genre of Queercore ... and of course her pioneering band Fifth Column. And for everyone who's ever researched Queercore and learned about that famous JD's Tape, well, this is their chance to hear every song that appeared on it, and many more featured in the zine during its 6-year run.

It took five segments to do justice to the interviews with Jon and GB, but I could not stop there. There are three more focusing on, if you will, the core of Queercore ... the bands that came out in the early 90s, some later bands and early influences. Of course the choices are subjective, but having the bulk of the show as internet-only allowed me the chance to do what I could never to on my broadcast show, to not worry about the language that gives punk music its spirit and joy.

Oh, yeah, the background graphic is a real page from JD's zine, with some additional graphics. I thought it just right to capture a flavor of the early Queercore culture.
