Newswrap: Iceland's caretaker Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir becomes the first openly lesbian or gay elected head of state in modern times with the victory of her leftist coalition in national elections; Burundi becomes the latest African nation to criminalize consensual adult same-gender sex, and the recently-freed gay AIDS educators in Senegal, who had each been sentenced to 8 years in prison for "indecent acts" and criminal conspiracy, face death threats; Hungary's parliament passes a registered partners law for same-gender couples giving them most of the rights of marriage; gay and lesbian couples begin legally marrying in Sweden and in the U.S. state of Iowa; New Hampshire's Senate narrowly approves a marriage equality bill, which had already passed in the House, but the governor's signature to make it law is uncertain; Maine's Senate also passes a marriage equality bill, which next goes to the state House; New Mexico avoids a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union by granting retirement health insurance benefits to the same-gender domestic partners of state workers; and gay Buddhist monks in Thailand will be instructed on how to be less "flamboyant" (written by GREG GORDON, with thanks to REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported this week by JOHN TORRES and MICHAEL LEBEAU)

Carol Wyatt will talk about a new social and civic group for GLBTs living outside the northwest corner of the loop. In a spasm of creativity, we're calling ourselves Northwest Corner. To introduce the group to our community, we're throwing a Launch Party (barbecue and cocktails) at my house of Friday, May 29th. We'd like to promote this event on queer voices if at all possible. Here are the basics about our group: The Northwest Corner is a Northwest Houston Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual & Transgender community organization that:

Organizes a variety of social events and networking opportunities for our members
Serves as a connecting point to the broader GLBT and Houston communities
Brings GLBT-friendly businesses and consumers together
Unites and empowers the GLBT residents of Northwest Houston

The targeted geographic area is bounded as follows: Southern Boundary: Loop 610 North and Hwy 290 Eastern Boundary: I-45 North Northern and Western Boundaries: Sam Houston Parkwa. more

This Bayou City Women's Chorus Concert will be a celebration of the many different styles and traditions of African music, including the African American tradition. The first portion will be songs of rhythm and freedom from South Africa and Zimbabwe to Kenya and the Caribbean. The second half will focus on the theme of the African American experience with jazz and blues influenced pieces like "Strange Fruit," and "Rock-A My Soul." We will also visit Broadway with such inspired pieces as "Miss Celie's Blues" from The Color Purple and "I Know Where I've Been" from Hairspray. We are proud to announce that Bayou City Women's Chorus will perform the Texas Premiere of "An Exhortation," which is parts of President Obama's victory speech from November 4, 2008 arranged for women's chorus and musical accompaniment. This concert will be on May 16 & 19 at the Unity Church. more

The Democratic Party controlled U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES passed a bill this week, by almost 75 votes, to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the country's hate-crimes laws. The targeted victim categories of actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, or disability would be expanded under the LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT HATE CRIME PREVENTION ACT to include LGBT people. The U.S. Justice Department would also be able to provide financial and other assistance to state and local jurisdictions to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated violence, or take the lead if necessary - especially if local authorities are blinded by the prejudice that prompted the crime. Some G.O.P. Congressmembers voted for the measure, familiarly known as THE MATTHEW SHEPARD ACT, but most argued against it during floor debate - none more egregiously than VIRGINIA FOXX of NORTH CAROLINA [hear her "hoax" allegations]. Matthew's mother JUDY SHEPARD, who was in the House gallery to hear those remarks, spoke with MSNBC news analyst RACHEL MADDOW [hear excerpts from their conversation]. MSNBC news analyst KEITH OLBERMANN names three "Worst Persons in the World" during his weeknight "Countdown" program. Congresswoman Foxx won the dubious top title two nights in a row this week

"TWO" I.D. by DAN MATHEWS (author of "Committed: A Rabble Rouser's Memoir" and Senior Vice President of PETA) [:12] + *About a year ago, literary commentator JANET MASON was really taken with poet CA CONRAD's "Deviant Propulsion," so she couldn't wait to sink her teeth into his latest work: "THE BOOK OF FRANK," published by Chax Press

Long-time activist 0ROBYN OCHS is the editor of the "Bisexual Resource Guide" and the quarterly publication "Bi Women". The main focus of her research, teaching and lecturing is breaking down the binary categories commonly used to define sexuality, gender, and race. The anthology she co-edited "GETTING BI: VOICES OF BISEXUALS AROUND THE WORLD," will see its second English edition released in June, with Spanish and Chinese versions to be published later this year. She discusses all of that with DIXIE TREICHEL and PAT NELSON [from "Fresh Fruit" on KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul] (with intro excerpts from a tongue-in-cheek "bi music medley" courtesy of JD DOYLE)
